Traffic and Road Safety

On this page we try to highlight some of the traffic and road safety issues within the Town of Wayland. Our goal is to improve local traffic safety compliance for our residents and visitors, provide data for out citizens to better understand the traffic and pedestrian problems we face, and to assist the Town in analyzing traffic data. Most importantly however, is to aspire to an accident rate of zero. With the community's continuing assistance and cooperation, we all help strive closer to this goal.

Road Safety Tip: Motorists taking their eyes off the road while trying to make a call.  Studies are currently being conducted by the state to determine if mobile phones are a factor in automobile accidents statewide. There is a one second delay for your foot to hit the brake pedal (the average reaction time). During that second you will have traveled over 30 feet (at 25MPH) causing an unavoidable collision with anything 30 feet or less in front of you. (For the mathematically curious, multiply speed in miles per hour by 1.44 which converts that speed to feet traveled per second. Example:  Rush hour on RT. 128  at 55MPH  55 x 1.44 = 79.2 feet traveled per second before any evasive action can even be taken!)
