Crime Prevention & Safety Guidelines
Hello Everyone, On this page we have tried to include as much information about crime prevention in today's society. Many complaints received by the department have had to do with computer crime. As more computers are added to bolster the increase of on-line purchasing, new criminal methods are also being developed to steal money and your identity. Fortunately many of the on-line vendors use a secure site with is "encrypted" so no one, but the vendor and you, can see the information. Look for the small yellow lock on the bottom of your vendors page. You can click on it and see who actually owns the site. Verasign is the leading company that supplies this privacy code to internet sales vendors, and guarantees you that site is secure. Identity Theft is a crime of which the numbers are rising yearly. Usually the result of someone obtaining your personal information, mainly through the use of your social security number, which many people still have as their drivers license number. In Massachusetts you have the option to change your license number from your social security number to an "S number." The RMV puts the "S number" on your license at your request. Take a moment now to check your license and if you are still using your social security number have it changed as soon as possible. The Wayland Police do not investigate Identify Theft because of its cross jurisdiction issues. We will of course take a report so that we can keep track of this trend. ID theft is the responsibility of the United States Secret Service, and for your convenience a direct link to that federal government's branch is included in Fighting Identify Theft link above. For more information how Identity Theft works, take a look at the Identity Theft and Internet Fraud Protection links above. .....and if you haven't already considered joining the Wayland Police Department's Neighborhood Alert Reverse E-mail List, please double click on the blue link in this paragraph and see what we have to offer. This is a free, private, no spam, and virus free site in which we can communicate timely events, tips, etc. to you instantly and privately. If you have any questions, please e-mail me the web-master. |
